How a routeis run.

  1. The week before

We walk and time the route, photograph each marker point and send you the measured distance in the run sheet.

  2. The briefing

Teams are formed at the start desk, each gets a pouch, a map or a lamp, and a written safety note. Five minutes, not fifteen.

  3. The route

Stewards stand at fixed points in high-visibility vests. Nobody is sent anywhere unlit, and no team is ever out of sight of a steward for long.

  4. The finish

Cards and answer sheets come back to the desk, the scorer reads the result and the hot-drinks table opens.

What the venuehas to have.

  • A start and finish point with 20 square metres for the desk and the result board
  • For the lock rooms: a hall from 180 square metres with a 3 m ceiling
  • A walking route on lit public paths, or a field or yard for the day programmes
  • One 15 A circuit at the desk; the route itself runs on batteries
  • Shelter for 40 people if the forecast turns, indoors or under canvas
  • Permission for us to place marker boards on the route for the day

Questionsabout this group.

What happens if it rains?

Harbour Cipher and Night Map both come with a written fallback: clue sleeves in waterproof film, and an indoor route inside the same venue. Field Trials holds a rain date at no extra cost if you name it when booking.

How large can a team be?

Five for Harbour Cipher, six for Lockroom Relay, four for Night Map and ten for Field Trials. We can change team size, which changes the number of stewards and the rotation length, and the written proposal shows that.

Are the routes checked before the day?

Yes. Every walking route is walked and timed by us in the week before the event, and the measured distance goes into the run sheet you receive.

Tell us the dateand the room.

You get back what is actually free on that date, and a written proposal that holds the final figure.
